Per Executive Order 2020-3, issued by President Preckwinkle, to protect the health and safety of our staff and customers, and to help mitigate the impact of COVID-19, essential functions of government will continue while protecting the public and our workforce through a reduction of the footprint in the County Building.
Starting March 18, 2020 and thru March 31, 2020, we will be temporarily closed to the public. To make any tax, fine or fee payments, please pay online (where available) or by US Mail. In person payments will not be available during this time. We will continue to service our taxpayers, but with limited availability. If you have any further questions, please call us at (312) 603-6961 (limited staff) and/or please email email@example.com or firstname.lastname@example.org. Staff will be working to respond to all email inquiries.
The business community and residents of Cook County are facing many challenges due to the COVID-19 outbreak. In an effort to alleviate some of the financial burden at this time of great uncertainty, the Department of Revenue is providing taxpayer relief in multiple areas. Please click HERE to see the complete listing of our relief items.
To assist taxpayers during this difficult time, the due dates for the February 2020 and March 2020 filing periods for our monthly Home Rule taxes have been extended. Returns and payments for February 2020 and March 2020 are now due on or before May 1, 2020. Interest and penalties will also not be assessed on these periods until after May 1, 2020.
The extended due dates apply to monthly filings/payments of the following Home Rule taxes that are currently available on our taxpayer portal: Alcoholic Beverage Tax, Amusement Tax, Gasoline and Diesel Fuel Tax, Hotel Accommodations Tax and Parking Lot and Garage Operations Tax. The extended due dates also apply to monthly filings/payments for the following Home Rule taxes that are NOT available on our taxpayer portal: Firearm and Firearm Ammunition Tax, New Motor Vehicle Tax, Tobacco Tax and Use Tax.
Programming changes are necessary for us to extend the due dates in our Integrated Tax Processing System. Until that is completed, when making a payment through the online portal, the system may indicate you owe interest and/or penalties. Simply pay the tax amount only by May 1, and within 48 hours the system will update to remove any interest and/or penalties for the February 2020 and March 2020 tax periods.
If you have specific questions regarding the taxpayer relief package, submit a general inquiry service request through the Taxpayer Portal or email us at email@example.com.
